The images and news reports stemming from the Hurricane Harvey disaster are stirring our hearts and souls. While we are called each and every day to reach out and help those in need, there are times such as this that we must respond quickly.

All campuses of First United Methodist Church, Alexander City are immediately called for a quick initial response. We need relief supplies to create cleaning kits to be delivered to an UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) warehouse. This initial response is at the request of our conference and district as cleaning of the flood waters begin. The supplies are specific and listed below. Monetary donations can also be made to the church for the supplies or directly to UMCOR.

Any and all of the following supplies will be appreciated. Please drop off supplies at the Green Street campus during office hours of Monday-Thursday (8am-4pm).

Cleaning Kits:

  • 5 Gallon buckets with resealable lids
    • Buckets from fast-food restaurants  or bakeries can be used if washed and cleaned.
    • Do not use buckets that have stored chemicals such as pain or pool cleaner.
    • Advertisements on the outside are acceptable
  • Liquid Laundry Detergent
    • 50 oz or two 25 oz bottles
  • Liquid Household Cleaner
    • 12-16 oz liquid cleaner that can be mixed with water
    • No spray cleaners
  • Dish Soap
    • 16-28 oz, any brand
  • Clothespins
  • Clothesline
    • One 100ft or two 50ft lines
    • Cotton or Plastic
  • Sponges
    • No cellulose sponges due to mold issues.
    • Remove from packaging
  • 24-Roll heavy-duty trash bags
    • 33-45 gallon sizes
    • Remove from the box
  • 18 Cleaning Wipes
    • Handi-wipes or reusable wipes
    • No terry cleaning towels
    • Remove from packaging
  • Can Air Freshener
    • Aerosol or pump
  • Insect Repellant Spray
    • 6-14 oz aerosol or spray pump with protective cover
  • Kitchen Dishwashing Gloves
    • Should be durable enough for multiple uses
    • Remove from packaging
  • Work Gloves
    • All Cotton
    • All Leather
    • Cotton with Leather Palm
  • Scouring Pads
    • Remove from wrapper
    • No stainless stell, brillo pads, or SOS pads (nothing with soap built in)
  • Scrub Brush
    • Plastic or Wood handle
  • Dust Masks

Additional Supplies Needed:

  • Box Fans (to dry out houses following flooding)
  • 25' heavy duty extension cords (to move the fans around inside homes)
  • 2&3 gallon garden sprayers (to fight mildew and mold)
  • Flat billed shovels (for removal of mud, wet carpet, pads, sheetrock, insulation, etc.)
  • Rakes (for removal of tree limbs, leaves, and muck from inside home and yards)
  • Wheel Barrows (2 wheeled, so they will not turn taking debris to the street)
  • White Kitchen 13 gallon trash can liners (for items to be salvaged)
  • Black Magic Markers to write on white trash can liners (to label contents)
  • 40-50 gallon heavy duty black trash can liners (for trash)

Important Notes:

  • All items must be new except for the actual bucket and lid
  • All cleaning agents must be liquid and in plastic containers. No powders please.
  • If you cannot find the requested size of a liquid item, use a smaller size. Using a larger sizes of any item will prevent the lid from sealing.
